Directions

Directions to Riversong Retreat Cottage.

If you are coming from the southern suburbs of Cape Town we have found this route the most direct.

  • Come out along the N2, go through Somerset West and over Sir Lowry’s Pass.
  • Pass the first turn off to Villiersdorp on your left as this is not a pleasant drive through Grabouw. About 5kms further on take the second turn off to Villiersdorp, opposite Peregrine Farm Stall which is on your right and has tractors on display. The signpost R321 Grabouw/Elgin marks the very sharp turn left opposite Peregrine. It is a very tight corner and almost a U bend.
  • Go down that road towards Grabouw and take the first turning to the right at signpost R321 Villiersdorp/Worcester.
  • Stay on this road for about 40 minutes until you come into Villiersdorp 8 km after crossing Theewaterskloof Dam.
  • Drive through Villiersdorp. Don’t blink it is not a big village!
  • When you are past the shops and almost out of the village you will find the DR Church on your left, a large red-brown facebrick building.
  • Turn right opposite the Church into Kerk Str (or Church Str). Drive down this road and we are the 3rd house on the left after the playing fields. It is an old Victorian house (no 11 Riversong Cottage) just before the road turns to the right.

It is about 115 kms from Rondebosch/UCT and can take about 1hr 20min depending on the traffic. You will find that the traffic out of Cape Town can start to build up from 3.30 pm every afternoon and even earlier on a Friday.

So in summary the directions are drive out of Cape Town on the N2 and turn left opposite Peregrine Farm Stall onto the R321, then take first turn right to Villiersdorp. Go through the village and turn right opposite the DR Church into Kerk Str. Riversong Cottage is the last house on the left, no 11, an old Victorian house.

An alternative route  would be to come via Stellenbosch, over Helshoogte Pass, through Pniel and on to Franschhoek and then Villiersdorp.

If you are coming from the northern suburbs, or along the N2 north of Caledon then please see alternative directions below the photograph.

Hope you have a pleasant journey and enjoy the beautiful scenery.

If you are coming from the northern suburbs of Cape Town then travel via the N1 and take the Wellington/Klapmuts Exit (next after the Stellenbosch Exit) and turn right under the N1. Stay on this road a short way until you find the road to the left signposted Franschhoek. Drive through farmlands alongside this road until you get to a T-junction, turn right to Franschhoek. Drive on and through Franschhoek and turn left at the T-junction in front of the Franschhoek monument. Go over Franschhoek Pass and on alongside Theewaterskloof Dam until another T-junction where you turn left to Villiersdorp. Then follow the last three points above. The Franschhoek Pass is very pleasant, but after heavy rains in winter do check that it is open.

If you are coming along N2 from north of Caledon then about 12 km further on you will pass Dassiesfontein Farmstall on the left and after a further 2 km take the turn off to Villiersdorp on the right. It will take another half an hour to reach Villiersdorp. After driving along near Theewaterskloof Dam you will come to a T-junction where you turn right into Villiersdorp.
